Feel helpless

I am considering Uber driver for my side income in line to maintain my luxurious life and owning the house.

Maybe working 3 jobs is too much for him to accept. I have commitment. I have debts to pay. I don't have a dad to pay me few thousands every month. My dad does not pay my car or house.

When it comes to money, I am alone.

It would be helpful to keep quiet if you are not helping in this dire time.

Thanks.

To make a living

4) Work
Firstly, they dropped us a New Year present - we were not getting any salary increment. BOO!

A month later, we got our salary increment. Yay~
I have to admit that I got the fattest pay this year.

Then they announced that we were all gonna lose our jobs. Shit...

While everyone was busy looking for new jobs... after many had resigned... they withdrew the decision. We got to keep our jobs.

Now, nothing surprises me anymore.

After these fiasco, I could not decide if staying is a right choice. I didn't doubt the group's direction or decision. My career is marred by static progress. It has not been very satisfying for doing the same job for 7 years. I wanna get promoted. I wanna do something different. I don't like to be a people manager. I do not have leadership qualities by nature.

When I was about to give up my job, an opportunity knocked on my door.

You are going to Australia for a month to help out on a project.

I gladly accepted it. I was sure there were people who were happy and envious of my opportunity. My role would change for at least half a year. I am now involved in project instead of managing people.

Have I mentioned I love sightseeing?

While my career seemed brighter and more promising, there was only one man who opposed me from going Australia.

And that man was none other than Kizzai.

He was the sole antagonist in this dramatic play. I could imagine his frustration and we were very close to ending our relationship simply because of the large difference in our stands. Don't get me wrong. I love him. But opportunities don't knock twice. I was not ready to compromise this time and I was ready to go through this without his blessing and support..

Eventually, he watched me left. He must have realised how stubborn I can be. Fortunately, we didn't break up and I was grateful.

The project was far from completion. Towards the end of my stay in Australia, he dropped by and we enjoyed ourselves. Back in KL, I have a good staff who is able to perform better than me. It is a good chance for her career progression. Hence, I am now relieved from managing a team and focus on the project. I am not gonna complain for at least a few good months.

My Australia pictures are posted here.

5 years

I couldn't find a science-related job after graduation. That was when they found me.

Aiyo call centre?
All you do is answer calls. No future!
Find a better job!

No one has written "My ambition is to work in a call centre". Not me. True enough, no one studies and aims to be a call centre consultants. Few months ago I was so surprised when I interviewed a girl. She applied for the position in call centre and guess what she studied in university? CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! God damn there is such course now?

Anyway, for all I know, I am clear with the department direction and my roles.

The increment freeze is lifted. Though I will be happier if the salary is higher, I can't complain. I am satisfied with my job. Enough said.

I still believe

I have come to a stage to appreciate what I have, quite easily.

Colleague : It's a bad year Jino. After the hard work we don't get pay rise.

Jino : Well... I am grateful to have a job.

Deep in me I am still confident with the group's strategic priorities. MAOB.

Managing At Our Best

We are committed to creating a culture where we all perform at our best. Personally, the 2 days training inspires me a lot to what I really want to do on my daily role and how my presence affects other colleagues. It closely resembles self realisation session to reflect on our aspirations and how much we believe in others when they are at their best.

The first step to a change always begin with self.

One of the tools introduced is 5-whys - it helps to explore deeper to identify the cause of our best environment. It has given me insight of who I can be when I am ok (at my best) and how I can potentially motivate my direct reports to bring out their best qualities.

When we focus on the outcome we tend to risk becoming frustrated and demotivated, which is termed In The Box behavior. Before we are drifted away by these emotions, it would be good to get out of the box quickly. Hence we were introduced the tool Emotion - Truth - Choice (E-T-C). It develops the ability to become more aware of our internal thinking that places us in the box. I think I am good in this 'coz I talk and debate with myself whenever conflicts arise. The choice is clearer when we accept truth about the shitty situation - life is not going to end if shit happens. It appears I am correct.

I shared partial of the Project 55.5 in the training, on how things turned sour to my depression. Then how nasty I was to my colleagues when I couldn't take it. Well, somehow I convinced myself to look at the Project 55.5 at a brighter side. The situation gradually improved, slightly at a time. My heart isn't aching as much. The itinerary is now at day 3. There I stand in the room half-crying, half laughing. I am still a human after all.

A wasteful journey

Dear FY,

To be honest I appreciate what VI had done to instill me the value of punctuality. How could I forget 100 push ups for being late for 10 minutes? Never. And this was how I learn to appreciate all who are punctual. At the same time my area of development is the efficiency of my time management. This was discussed in my performance review lately.

My ex, let us call him MS, was lamenting about his role in the organisation this evening. One of the issue we discussed was his punctuality to work. Sadly, I found the discussion to be very negative. He behaved exactly like an ordinary staff.

Do I look like I care to be punctual? You guys never even say thank you.
I know my problems for 5 years now. If this can be changed, I would change 5 years ago and I don't need you to tell me this today.
I have enough warning letters, I don't mind getting another 10? So what?
I am not helping myself? This is not something I can control. You need to accept.
Yes of course I am behaving like a normal staff. Cause I AM A NORMAL STAFF!
There are 2 people higher than you who had given me the same feedback. So YOU don't talk to me as if you can change me.
I am being mistreated by EVERY ONE. ALL OF YOU. Why would I care anymore?

These are the words I least expected from him. In spite of all these nasty comments, I felt the burden is finally lifted.

If you think I enjoy waking up at 5 every morning to call you 60 times to ensure you wake up to work, yet you find this amazingly abusive?
Could you imagine how much of sleep I could save if you were to share this with me 4 years ago?
You are right. I could save couple of ringgit on my phone bills too.
I am sorry I laugh too loud. I thought I was putting effort for your good but it turned out you don't need me.
You are right. No one can change you. Who am I anyway?

Dear FY,

Tonight hurts so much not because I still love him. Be it friends or lover, my bosses or my subordinates, I would be happy if my effort is appreciated. Apparently, to him, the time I spent is ill treatment.

Forgive me for being a fool.

Yours truly,

Been too negative

Dear FY,

It certainly did not feel good to return to office on weekend when every one had yet to recover from hangover. To make the day worse, the first email I read was a manager call back request.

Looked around but there was no one to share this work load. Unwillingly, I didn't have choice but to call the customer myself.

Honest be told, I could not concentrate on what the customer said for the first 10 minutes.

"Your problem is solved,,, get it done please" I mumbled in my thought.

When customer moved on to the next part of the story, I sat up straight and told myself I need to concentrate on this part. What the customer said next left me in awe, I could not respond quick enough to fill in the empty gap.

"I am glad every thing is sorted and you are satisfied with our resolution, Mr.X. There is no better way to start my day than you sharing your experience with us. I am confident the previous consultant will be very thrilled to hear your compliment. Thank you and appreciate your time to take my call."

It turned up to be a compliment call to the previous consultant! And trust me, when I reviewed the call, he was so lively and empathetic with customer. This was very unlike him. Perhaps he had the positive vibe that morning and passed to the customer. In a cycle it was passed back to me.

My boss shared this story to her boss, and higher and further. Global Head of Contact Centre congratulated him for such beautiful story. The least I could do to motivate and ensure his effort was recognised was by sharing this with the team. It's a valuable lesson that morning ; Don't be too negative and conclude with assumption.

In a separate incident, a consultant highlighted a possible account take over. This happened 10 minutes before the last manager ended his shift. So sad that the manager had to be me. I really appreciate that she notified us but the timing was seriously wrong. Curse the caller. Anyway this lady has a high instinct in identifying possible fraudsters. And I chose not to ignore her.

Investigating fraudsters calls is painfully time taking. As a result, we manage to identify several more findings and remedial actions were taken. Did I complain on the 3 additional hours I spent in office? 'Coz I did! They are charity!

Emails were circulated so far above. Internal reporters requested her pictures. Several conference interviews were conducted. Visitors who visited us requested to meet her. Our Group COO made a special request to speak to her during his visit to our office.

My name was not mentioned. No one but the same consultant ever thanked me. Heck that did not matter. 'Coz I know if I did not do this, more customers will be victimised. If ever I turn my deaf ear to her, she would not be where she is. At the very least she knew I helped her. Her picture is right at the entrance of the building. Her video was uploaded in internal news share. Little did we expect the investigation will turn her into a super star. I felt so proud her effort and talent was recognised.

Dear FY,

In reality many managers, me inclusive, blame the staff for not performing. I overheard a conversation last night between two staff near me, and I felt the same pain as they did; I meet KPI A, but it's not good if I fail KPI B and C. We find fault in them, hoping they will improve. How much more motivation are we taking away from them if we keep doing the same? How much support have we given them, I start to wonder?

I will be in Bangkok tomorrow, FY. I gave myself an assignment to find answer to my own question : If I have been so negative at work, what do I expect from my people?

Yours truly,

Corporate experience

Dear FY,

My job revolved mainly around my direct manager and my self interest till a year ago. I didn't have to worry how my boss's boss thinks. Other staff did not matter as long as I can go home on time. There's no room for work when I am home. Never had I thought of returning to office to finish my work.

Well... that was a year ago.

My boss's mood swing can kill. There are 7 colleagues now I need to work with. I am managing a team of 10 staff where their performance and discipline are my responsibility. Not to mention I have daily routine to entertain 90 other staff which is not part of my job scope or responsibility.

A staff of other team look for me for leave approval. I have to look into it.
A staff asked me questions on procedure. I have to follow up in the end?
My team member is sick and did not turn up to work. I have to check on her.
I picked up the phone and other team member is sick. I have to check him out.
That girl is in toilet for 20 minutes. I have to find out why.
This guy has given wrong advise. Why am I saying sorry to customer, not his manager?

Within a year, a pea size salary increment had me dealing so many people. Returning to office on weekend is part of routine 'coz of my incompetence.

I am an introvert in nature and I should not be dealing with so many people to begin with. Decision making is my weakness. Judgement is my area of development.

Why am I here, FY? I feel lost now.

I have not found the satisfaction to come to work. To describe my feeling now, this is exactly how I started in the organization: I hate coming to work.

4 years

Dear FY,

Never have I thought to work here as fresh graduate till this day. This is my first permanent job and I was totally lost at first. A bioscience student to work in a call centre? Come on... I definitely did not write "My ambition is call centre consultant" when I was young. This job is definitely an "accident" - ended up here for so long 'coz the pay is higher than what I can seek out there.

I do not know how I survived.... But yeah I enjoyed my first 3 years of career. A stable job with less risk. A job that gives me higher pay than the rest if I put in more effort. I was paid for working extra hours. Punctual to work and back home. Most importantly I do not give a damn to anyone

4 years later, the story has changed. Perhaps it is not a good idea for people like me to move up the career ladder to begin with.

I started to doubt my ability in people management. Engagement and people connection are my weakest attribute. I like to be alone most of the time - period and introvert, as how you know me all the while. To sum them all, I am not a leader. Every one knows this. Yet I chose to take this path.

Not sure if I have made the right decision.

The first challenge started with 3 staff resigned in the same month. The colleagues were laughing at my luck for losing so many precious staff in an instant. My boss, inclusive. When my boss made fun of me that night, I could not hold the tears and showed them how weak I am.

I was helpless against my own emotions. Was I really not doing enough to retain my own staff? Is it me that they chose to leave? Have I not been supportive in their role?

Well, I really wish you were here to talk to me, FY.

There are things I could not speak to someone. It is not natural for me to talk. I need a hug. Or at least your presence will alleviate my stress that night. No, you were not here. It's fine. I perfectly aware we are separated, you see. 'Cos thinking of you simply make me stronger. Most importantly I still have you.

I promise you FY I will not show them the weak side of me. Not anymore. You said that I am the Ultraman in your heart.

Resignation

I had my first agent resignation last month. The reason is not because I am not doing my job well or because the pay is not up to expectation. She is suffering health complication. In a span of a month her health condition turned from bad to worse. Professional surgeon in Seattle with 20 years of experience gives her 60% success rate.

For a girl to fight her emotion and fear of loss is seriously not a simple feat.

Have you imagined how you would like to spend the last minute of your life? I have not.

She left me her locker padlock on the day we signed all documents, which was also her last day in the office.

Boss do you know the meaning when a girl gives you a padlock?
No. Any specific meaning?
Terrible la you boss. Go look up the Italy story on internet.
Boss will you keep this lock for me and wait for my return?

We made a promise to keep her lock till she returns.

Before she told me the bad news we were discussing on our motivation to work. Now I wish I am the motivation for you to keep moving forward and face the challenges.

Career progression

In my last post I said there is only a vacancy up to grab. What vacancy is that?

Position of Australia Contact Centre Team Manager.

My last entry was a depression venting 'coz I thought there was only a vacant position and I will never be appointed a team manager. The seat was reserved for her. Every one knows this.

Hell I was wrong.

The seat was reserved for her is not wrong. There is only a vacant position is not wrong either.

The big boss simply add another position vacant in her team. I was not sure if this is pre-planned or a last minute decision, but hey! My direct boss sms-ed me at 2.30 a.m. to congratulate me.

No official announcement from the management yet at this point of time as I am away celebrating my Chinese New Year. You read this correctly!!! I took my Chinese New Year leaves 3 weeks after the real day.

2014. A new role in the company. The same role on bed.

Depression... Seriously depressed

Just an update from below post, the funny character finally tendered his/ her resignation and it was a 24 hours notice. And I thought I could finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Apparently I am wrong.

I thought I deserve a long break for the job I had done so far. Stressed for the past 2 months, I approached my boss and requested for a week off. The plan would go smoothly if there is no obstacle.

The obstacle is none other than the "Career progression interview".

I know, you know and the whole world knows that this vacancy is not dedicated to me. It is clear this sandiwara is a platform to make them promoted officially, and I will never come to the picture.

Why, of all days in the week I am scheduled to the mid of week? How am I going for my long break?

Fuck the interview, it cannot be rescheduled. My carefree boss asked me to reschedule my plan instead.

I could not stand this. I cried in office (unnoticed). I wrote and signed my resignation letter but my colleague shreded it.

All I want is a short trip during weekend, maybe slight extend to Monday. But I was denied annual leave. When they asked me to schedule my trip to weekdays, WHO THE FUCK IN THE WORLD IS FREE ON WEEKDAYS FOR TRIPS??? IDIOTS.

At times I do not feel appreciated by the department. Compared to colleagues who get the same pay as me, I worked from 5 a.m. and stayed till 9 p.m.. Mind you this is charity, not overtime. And they blamed it on my time management.

Boss: Now you know how hard it is to do manager's work.
Jino: Fuck off. I am not a manager and I have no pay rise or bonus like a manager.

Never in the past 3 years have I felt so disturbed by work.

FUCK IT ALL!!!

A true friend and a good man. Thanks.

Starting 2014 is a bizarre to my career experience. I am assigned to 7 new hires to my department and my role is to prepare them to meet their targets during the learning curve, which we call this period, Academy. I personally call this period, PERIOD.

Given this opportunity to "handle" people for real and to involve myself more to management, that should be an eye opening experience. Only if the funny character did not show up.

This funny character has the characteristics not widely accepted and his attitude is seriously not something a new hire should display. Acting proud and resistant to feedback is seriously annoying.

In just a week numerous complaints were raised not only from internal department but also from other departments of several levels, security, cafeteria crews and even cleaners. As much as I hate medicine and doctors, I forced 2 panadols down my throat which I never had for the past 2 years. I seriously cannot take the pain anymore.

The complaints from other colleagues were very personal; eg: The funny character do this. The funny character do that. Aiyo, the funny character is rude etc. But one complaint from a colleague is very soothing and gives me hope. I was not aware that the complaint went directly to my boss's boss and I only found out a few days later from another boss.

Shah suffered by sitting next to this funny character. That is not including answering questions and chatting. In just 20 minutes he moved to a place far enough he can call it solace. He was there witnessing my ordeal. He raised a complaint because he cares about me. I was damn touched when I hear this.

"Boss. That funny character is too much. Can you see how Jino was treated? Jino deserves better than this. This is not fair to Jino."

Thanks my friend Shah.

Let's start the new year...

... with a quick selfie~

The new year starts with the price reduction of kangkung. Bravo Malaysia government!!! Our lives depend on kangkung!!! Very soon your kangkung scheme will replace our MYR currency.

Thailand is politically unstable at the moment but who knows what will happen in April? Hopefully every thing will be fine during Songkran. What're my targets in Songkran? I don't have to tell, do I?

Starting 2014, my job description has a drastic change which I doubt I can cope. From a normal customer service consultant I evolved into many other roles, mostly unwillingly. If I may say, I currently deal the tasks of a team manager cum trainer but the company pays me slightly higher than new hires who work here lesser than a month. When I say slightly it means SLIGHTLY higher than a new hire. Not to mention the pay cut starting 2014 in lieu with the company global standards lol. And then Malaysia government announced the price reduction of kangkung!!! Wow so much oh "help"!!!

I find life is so difficult, especially the iPhone 4 is constantly showing its tantrum. And then gym membership which I promised myself since 2012. Which is a better show off? A good body or a good phone? Dilemma.

Not that I have any financial difficulty I cannot afford both. I just find life is depressing at times. Just need someone to pat my back and give me encouragement to continue my life. Now I am done with my random rant. Signing off~

Financially upset

When one faces financial problem and feels uncertain about his money, he will gradually go into denial. That is when every second is an emotional and monetary burden. While PTPTN has enslaved many of my peers upon graduation, I am grateful that I have yet to worsen my debt with a car loan.

While my family and sozai disagree kao kao, I strongly believe that the multicash savings plan that I signed up recently will benefit me in future. Save RM6000 annually for a decade and interest will accumulate to the age of 70 (wonder if I can live that long). By doing so, they claim that I 'freeze' largely of my cash from unforeseen circumstances. I couldn't agree more with that.

However, I understand anyone who puts 100% of their money into a single investment is asking for pain and anguish. Two components combine to create an allocation plan; financial situation and risk. The kind of change that can trigger significant allocation changes are disability, critical illness, employment or income change, and more. Unless one of these changes significantly, there should be only modest adjustment in allocation. I may be poor in finance management, I am not close to a level so crazy that I leave myself cashless. Though not stable at the moment, I am confident that securing my financial future is achievable in time to come. On top of that, the savings comes with small insurance features. The definition of insurance is too general to describe but if I die today, I will at least not burden my parents with my existing debts.

And I am desperately looking for a part time job with super flexible work time. The commitments are killing me away. Seriously, I am bad with financial planning.

Balance of life

Before my work starts I look forward to my lunch time. After lunch, I cannot wait to dash home. Moods vary with Monday blues and thank god it's Friday. I don't like my job. I want to quit.

Oh no I cannot quit! I need money. I want to save. There's no specific reason to save at the moment but I find it depressing to spend my hard earn money. The more I save, the happier I am.

Open up the wallet and it's my source of motivation at work.

Objectives
"Jino. What is your objective here? Do you work here to gain experience? Money? Part time while waiting for studies? To get promoted? Where do you see yourself in this company in the days to come?" asked my line-manager on my 5th day of answering calls.

"I have something in my mind but it's still too early to disclose. I need more time before I can take my stand. Give me 4 months and I will get back to you."

Certainly, I know what I want from this job. No doubt I will be there in 2 years. Wait till the right time comes and he will know my decision.

林宇中

It's not easy to forget a person one used to like. A special song dedicated to Nicholas Tang. Is he thinking what I am thinking (if he can understand)?

Investment
Imagine I have a habit to save MYR 1,000 every month. Besides spending on food and shopping, is there any suggestions on investment? The amount is very little, I understand. Maybe it's too early to talk about this. Yet I appreciate any recommendation that can put the money into good use.

Credit card
I see credit card in many good ways to improve quality of life and the convenience a card made of plastic provides. At the same time, I observe the hazardous sides of the card which have jeopardized many families. I can't help to wonder if I am sufficiently educated to handle the card. The application form has been filled in as I am seriously interested to obtain one. All that is left is the gut to submit the paper.

October
September is coming to an end. A wallet which can fit 3.5"X2.5" photo is perfect to grace the month.  Perhaps Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will do a fine job too.

1st permanent job

16 days. In these 16 days I have been 'fooling' around and been 'fooled' while receiving pay. To those who concern, I am currently working in a bank call centre, located in Cyberjaya. Transport is provided therefore distance is not in question. Some were confused on how Biochemistry is related to banking service. That being said, there is no connection between them. Bioscience does not promise future in Malaysia. To survive in KL is tough, let alone to make a living with my degree. Hence, my job in customer service.

At the same time, I am always alert when it comes to graduate studies. I was once offered a position in UPM, but was then rejected because I cannot comply to both working time. When I have to earn for living, it is natural to consider graduate studies as the second priority. I do not want my degree to go to waste, yet I have no option at the moment.

Back to the title, I am not sure if he plays dumb but there is a colleague who asks me:

Colleague: What do you major at?
Jino: Biochemistry.
Colleague: I know. That is a new course for banking or finance, 'is it'?

That question depressed me. A lot.

There is a rule that restrict handphones in the building. All staff, by all means, are required to keep handphones in the lockers. Imagine 9 hours working without handphone. It is understandable, but is also annoying, agree? That also explains the reason I reply slower than usual. And we have a cafeteria which offers variety of 'food'. We have vege pedas, ayam goreng pedas, tofu pedas, steam ikan pedas, potato pedas. I can only entertain white rice and dhal. KFC is located miles away. Seriously, I start loosing weight on the 2nd week of working.

After an 8-days English assessment upon hiring, I stumbled upon many 'situation' which I never thought are grammatically incorrect. At the same time, we were taught on phonemic codes which help in pronunciation. I am then assigned to Australian credit card call centre. That means I'm gonna be tortured by Aussie.

Now that the English assessment was over, we proceed to process training where we are required to fully master the product knowledge. Due to lack of exposure, I am struggling to comprehend bank language and terminologies. Studying in bank for 2 days has enlightened me. After all, bank is no charity institution. If a lawyer is a professional liar, bank is a legal loan shark. Seeing as so many victims fall into bank's trap and seduction, it is fortunate I do not have a credit card at the moment. Credit, when users are unaware of the limit, is disastrous. Examples set by many credit card slaves on the street. Many lessons to come in the coming weeks.

People like us spend a lot. As for me, switching from prepaid to postpaid has caused me financial crisis. You won't notice how you spend your credit till the statement date comes. As for me, for the 1st time in my life I was about to reach my credit limit this month. While I always scold Edwin on his overused credit, it's a slap on my face when I commit to the same act. RM 128.56 in one month, wei! It's gonna kill me a lot on my 1st salary. I need extra discipline if I were to get myself a credit card >.<.

p/s: If I am quickly running out of credit, I wonder how Khai is doing over there. Maxis sms Digi - unbearable...

The last chapter

Think! Think! Think!

Today isn't a usual Tuesday.

After many weekends down the drain pulling my thesis, I couldn't contain the excitement another instant. I'm thrilled to announce that the thesis is finally submitted to respective parties. The toughest part in writing a thesis is not the content or analysis of data. It is to regulate the thesis format to every lecturers' 'taste' that I cursed Dr. Seaweed, Dr. CB and Dr. Ferment almost every night. While every lecturer describes the format differently, around that time everyone was causing huge uproars. It is safe to assume that if there are 100 lecturers in UTAR, then we have 100 different formats for thesis writing to follow. That's UTAR for you.

My 2nd draft

Reading journals and checking thesis were my favourite in class and at home but those were the time. Now that the thesis has nothing in connection to me, I've temporary lost my objective of life. You worked and contributed endlessly to this company and when you grew old, you no longer have the value and hence the dismissal from the company. You've lost the job, you wander around the house aimlessly. You wake up at 7 morning to realize you have no office to go to. You clean dishes at 2 p.m. when by right you had meetings at this hour.

If I am allowed, this is how I feel currently. More or less. Something is found missing in me. My life will be pretty flat in the days to come. That aside, I am very satisfied with the outcome. Thesis I mean. It is undeniable that I have gained knowledge and experience in this field, strangely the pressure was well compensated with the joy and fun along the team mates throughout the project.

Of 'coz, I have finals coming real soon but the motivation has not reached the stimulative level.
